My first year in business
A year ago, I found myself lying on my couch after putting the baby to bed, suddenly filled with a sense of urgency for something more. Thoughts and questions swirled in my mind. I wanted to make more money, but I also craved the satisfaction of pursuing a passion. I wanted to create something meaningful that I could truly call my own. After many nights of deep reflection and exploring various options online, I discovered financial coaching. It combined my love for numbers, money, and budgeting with my ambitious and upbeat personality. It was a no-brainer: I was going to become a financial coach!
After sharing my idea with my husband and a few close family members and friends, I took action. I came up with a business name and designed a logo. I chose a business structure and handled the legalities on my own. I created a website and produced content by watching countless tutorials. I got business cards printed and set up social media pages. I listened to numerous podcasts and audiobooks to keep myself motivated. I drafted a business plan along with a vision and mission that I’m proud of. I figured out how to sync my platforms for better efficiency and created a CRM that works for me, as well as a scheduling page. I networked and stepped well outside my comfort zone, meeting some amazing people along the way. Looking back at the past year, I am incredibly proud of what I have accomplished.
I learned a lot this year. I had to pivot and identify what worked best for me and my clients. I faced the challenge of impostor syndrome when it came to calling myself a financial coach; that was tough. I had to build my confidence and trust in myself. I learned to stop seeking validation from those around me, realizing that the only validation that truly mattered was my own. I practiced self-compassion and patience, understanding that seasons and priorities change. This journey is mine, and I have to take my time building it because it’s not going anywhere—I am in charge.
I have had the opportunity to help some wonderful people, and I am just getting started. To better serve my clients, I have decided to further my education and work toward obtaining my Accredited Financial Counselor (AFC) certification. Thank you to everyone who has supported me over the past year; it truly takes a village! For anyone hesitant about chasing their dreams, my advice is simple: just dive in! You can figure things out as you go—just get started. If I can do it, so can you! The time is now; you can do hard things! I’m here for you!
